MERCEDES CECILIA

I have been painting since a child, carrying my box with paints.

It was October of 1980 when I began painting the The Waters of the Catskill Mountains. That Autumn was the first time in my adult life that I felt the sense of being at home, a deep feeling of interconnectedness with my environment, the community and wonderful light of these area. Camping in the Catskill’s State Parks during every season for 6 years, reasurme this is the place I wish to live.

In June of 1986, I made these mountains my home. I live in Woodstock, NY. This is the place I love every day, in every season. Following in the footsteps of the Hudson River artists, I also celebrate our River and the Catskill Mountains, wishing and working  to preserve the aliveness of Planet Earth and our communities.

I feel joy when the light plays on the surface of the waters when trees, mountains, and sky weaves their forms with a lake, river, or stream. Drawn by the movements of light creating forms and revealing a tapestry of colors, my complete being follows the movements of light on the water. I love hearing the trees whispering to the wind, and watch their forms becoming one with the waters and the light.

I paint as mapping the spaces of light.  By painting in front of the same lakes and streams every month, year after year, I observe and feel deeply the changes taking place in our environment and the effects of these changes on our communities, our forests, wild life and our vegetable gardens.

Graduated from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts 1986. I am so grateful for each and all of our Artists-Professors and Mentors. The years 1980 to 1986, I lived among a wonderful art community.

Every time I walk close to Cooperlake, see the clouds reflecting on the Millstream, my heart smiles remembering our professor who for 30 years brought students to The Catskills Mountains, to paint the Autumm and the begining of Spring. When the vans and cars arrived I couldn’t talk… just moving my head to see all the colors, and the streams, the clouds … Thank you Mr. Lou Sloan. It was the first time in my live I saw the wilderness of USA.
